Genetic test for the presence or absence of horns for many European breeds including Charolais and Angus.

There are four variants of the polled allele: Celtic, Friesen, Mongolian, and Guarani. This test looks at the Celtic variant, which is related to Celtic breeds, including Charolais, Angus, and many other European breeds, with the exception of Holstein-Friesen and Jersey breeds. We do not test for the other variants and we do not test for scurs.

Horned-polled is $20 per test.

* There is an additional $2 fee per sample per test for hair samples due to the additional time and labor required to process hair samples.

Gene Check Result Explanation
HH Carries two copies of the Horned, ‘H’ allele. This head of cattle will be horned and will always pass one ‘H’ allele to its offspring.
HPc Carries one copy of the Horned, ‘H’ allele and one of the Celtic Polled, ‘Pc’, allele. Will pass one ‘Pc’ allele to its offspring approximately 50% of the time. Can be polled or scurred.
PcPc Carries two copies of the Celtic Polled, ‘Pc’, allele. This head of cattle is Polled and will always pass one ‘Pc’ allele to its offspring.

We store extracted DNA samples for 5 years.  Therefore, additional testing can be done from that stored DNA.  Just give us a call or email us with the information on the sample/samples for which you would like to run additional tests.

Rush testing (results available 1-2 business days from receipt of samples) is available for an additional fee of $10 per test per sample. Rush testing is not available for blood cards.

Results are reported rapidly and confidentially and are typically available 3-5 business days from receipt of samples. Sequential testing and large lots, particularly during the Spring busy season, may require somewhat longer turnaround times. Results will be emailed to the address provided on the testing submission form. Individual certificates are available upon request.
