Cryptochrome 1 (CRY1)

Cryptochromes are a family of proteins used by pigeons and other avian species to sense the magnetic field of the Earth and use this information to aid their orientation and navigation. This ability is known as “Magnetoreception”.

In pigeons, Cryptochrome 1 is expressed in the retina and has been found to have a statistical association with performance in professional racing. While the mechanism is still being researched, it is believed that the mutation may impact the expression of the CRY1 gene, allowing animals with this mutation to sense magnetic fields more strongly.

Results are reported rapidly and confidentially and are typically available 3-5 business days from receipt of samples. Sequential testing and large lots, particularly during the Spring busy season, may require somewhat longer turnaround times.

Rush service is available for an extra fee of $10 per test per sample. Rush results are available 1-2 business days after receiving the sample. Rush testing is not available for blood cards.

We store extracted DNA samples for 5 years.  Therefore, additional testing can be done from that stored DNA.  Just give us a call or email us with the information on the sample/samples for which you would like to run additional tests.

Results will be emailed to the address provided on the testing submission form. Gene Check can provide individual certificates for animals upon request. Please note that we no longer send paper copies of results, except upon request!
