Calpain 316 and 4751
The CAPN1 gene codes for the µ-calpain enzyme, which is crucial for the postmortem tenderization process of meat. When the µ-calpain enzyme is activated, it weakens muscle structure and increases the tenderness of meat. This increase in meat tenderness is associated with a “C” allele at either Calpain 316 or Calpain 4751. The CC genotypes for both Calpain 316 and 4751 are desirable for tenderness, but some studies have noted potential antagonistic association with other traits, such as slightly lower final weight and average daily gain, so CG or CT genotypes may be the most desirable genotypes for Calpain 316 and Calpain 4751 respectively.
Please note that Calpain 316 is rare and even absent in the Brahman breed.

Results are reported rapidly and confidentially and are typically available 3-5 business days from receipt of samples. Sequential testing and large lots, particularly during the Spring busy season, may require somewhat longer turnaround times.
Rush service is available for an extra fee of $10 per test per sample. Rush results are available 1-2 business days after receiving the sample. Rush testing is not available for blood cards.
Results will be emailed to the address provided on the testing submission form. Individual certificates are available upon request.
We store extracted DNA samples for 5 years. Therefore, additional testing can be done from that stored DNA. Just give us a call or email us with the information on the sample/ samples for which you would like to run additional tests.
