Booroola

Booroola describes a genetic mutation in sheep that results in increased ovulation rate, leading to an increase in the chance of multiple births from a single Ewe. Animals that are homozygous (BB) for the Booroola gene have an increased chance to produce triplets or quadruplets, and will always pass on a copy of the Booroola gene to their offspring. Animals that are heterozygous (B+) have an increased chance to produce twins, and are carriers of the Booroola gene, with a ~50% chance to pass a copy of the gene to their offspring. Animals without the Booroola gene (++) are less likely to produce twins, and cannot pass a copy to their offspring.

Results are reported rapidly and confidentially and are typically available 3-5 business days from receipt of samples. During the Spring busy season, turnaround times may be a few days longer, especially with sequential testing and large sample quantity.

Rush service is available for an extra fee of $10 per test per sample. Rush results are available 1-2 business days after receiving the sample. Rush testing is not available for blood cards.

Results will be emailed to the address provided on the testing submission form. Individual certificates are available upon request.

We store extracted DNA samples for 5 years. Therefore, if you have already sent in samples for testing, additional testing can be done from that stored DNA. Just give us a call or email us with the information on the sample/ samples for which you would like to run additional tests.
