Ectodermal Dysplasia

(Hairy Lamb)

Originally identified in the Southdown breed, Ectodermal Dysplasia (also known as “Hairy Lamb”) is a genetic disorder affecting the ectodermal layer in sheep embryos. The ectodermal layer plays an important role in the development of the animal’s hair, skin, teeth, and hooves. The common name for this condition comes from the unusual appearance of the hair of affected animals, which is wispy and straight rather than the expected woolen coat. Because the ectodermal layer is so critical in development, ED animals have a variety of undesirable characteristics including thin skin, abnormal jaw and tooth formation, and dysfunctional sweat glands. Affected animals are more susceptible to environmental and breeding stressors, and will generally die within a few weeks of birth.
